Hylands Adventure Castle

With limited funds they were looking for a shell which would serve to house the new play area, which could be developed over the coming months and years. Hylands House itself was built in 1730 and purchased by Chelmsford Borough Council in 1966. It is now a very popular destination for day trippers and dog walkers, as well as being available for private hire for weddings and private functions. With gardens and extensive parkland, artists studios, café, events and workshops Chelmsford Borough Council wanted a bespoke play facility that would complement the ethos of the site, a folly for the 21st Century.

Chelmsford Borough Council selected Timberplay to create the Castle, confident that they could build a bespoke play feature to complement Hylands historical landscape. The result was Hylands Adventure Castle, a structure located at the northern end of the estate to encourage visitors to explore more of the park. It was designed to delight and enthral young visitors, but also provide more challenging play for teenagers.

The castle was constructed and designed by Timberplay, but in order to keep within the limited budget Chelmsford Borough Council supported the project by undertaking the groundwork independently. The first phase of the Castle currently houses a selection of well chosen equipment, including a Sound Roller, Nest Swing, Jack Straw See Saw and Rotating Disc, with space to add to the equipment over coming years as funding becomes available.
