We support Earth Day 2022

22 Apr 2022

Today In Play

April 22nd unites many as people worldwide come together to support the movement of Earth Day.

As there becomes an increasing urgency to protect our planet, Earth day is a key annual event that encourages people to promote sustainability and recognise the effects of climate change now, before it is too late. There are over 190 countries engaged in recognising the day of action – promoting change on individual, company and government policy to protect our and our future generations.

The history of Earth Day

The history of Earth Day stems back to the 1970s; it began in the United States after millions of people participated in street protests after the Santa Barbra oil spill in 1969. After this, citizens across America began to recognise the severe impact of air pollution on health, well-being and our planet. The first-ever Earth Day led to the creation of the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the passing of several, never seen before, environmental laws.

Earth Day went global in 1990; Denis Hayes, an environmental activist key to the success of policy change in the United States, was approached by a group of environmental leaders to organise another significant campaign for the planet. This caused the outreach of Earth Day to go from a national level to global, with over 200 million people spanning over 141 countries mobilised to bring environmental issues to the world stage. The magnificent efforts of all on Earth Day 1990 to support recycling efforts worldwide caused a significant change to everyday life and paved the way for the 1992 United Nations Earth Summit.

What are the key focuses of Earth Day?

Earth day focuses on many topics with the overall aim of aiding greener recovery across the world; some of these include:

  • Deforestation
  • Climate Change
  • Waste Management
  • Pollution
  • Recycling
  • Green Energy

Earth day now reaches over 1 billion people every year to create changes to all these topics across the world.

Timberplay uses sustainable timbers.

All our products are manufactured with natural landscapes in mind, with the aim of creating immersive green, natural play spaces that children can enjoy for generations. To do this, we use natural, sustainable timbers. Our wood supplier is certified according to CFCS 2002:2013/PEFC D 1003:2013, and our production processes are too. The certification confirms that our timber comes from sustainably managed forests.

What is sustainable forest management?

"The stewardship and use of forests and forest lands in a way, and at a rate, that maintains their biodiversity, productivity, regeneration capacity, vitality and their potential to fulfil, now and in the future, relevant ecological, economic and social functions, at local, national, and global levels, and that does not cause damage to other ecosystems." As defined by Forest Europe and adopted by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

Sustainable practices within our business

Here at Timberplay, one of our core beliefs is to be environmentally friendly, and this isn't just through our products. Day-to-day, we strive to reduce our carbon footprint in many ways, such as using recycled materials, where possible, for surfacing and reducing the amount we travel by car. We support many organisations such as BIAZA and The Landscape Institute in their strive to promote better ways for greener recovery. These are just a few small ways in which we are trying to make a change, and through 2022, we will strive even further to move Timberplay towards our net-zero aim.

All of us can do many things on an individual level or at a business level to make an environmental change; want to get involved? Find out more about Earth Day using this link.
